If you’re depressed and angry about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, you’re in good company. A lot of Russians feel the same way, and they’re speaking out despite what it will do to their lives and careers.
A former Russia Today reporter named Jonny Tickle just posted a long Twitter thread with examples. Here are a few:
You know what happened to American celebrities who spoke out against Trump when he was president? They became even more famous and made even more money. It’s an entire industry, even now that he’s out of office. They’re still acting like his very existence is the end of America and congratulating themselves on their bravery. Meanwhile, these Russians are suffering actual consequences for opposing an actual tyrant.
Here’s what can happen to Russians who don’t comply with the state:

At this point, I don’t know what to believe about how the invasion is going. Putin must have assumed it would be over by now, but he’s not going to let innocent human lives stop him from finishing what he started. The Ukrainians seem to be at least as skilled in propaganda as the Russians, which makes sense because they’re both former Soviet states. I’m still seeing people pushing “the Ghost of Kyiv,” which seems to be a complete urban legend.
I’ve given up trying to follow the minute-by-minute coverage. It’s just too much, and there’s nothing I can do about any of it. I hope Ukraine somehow prevails, however unlikely that may be.
And even in the middle of all this, America is still buying Russian oil. Biden would rather fund this unprovoked invasion than put up with headlines about even higher gas prices.
At this point, is anybody surprised Biden is bad at his job? Every single president in my adult life has been worse than the one before him. So that means every single time you see me, that’s during the worst presidential administration of my life.1

I don’t know much about Australia’s Aborigines, except I should feel guilty about being the same color as the people who have subjugated them for centuries. But this show is not only a glimpse at another culture, it’s a hell of a lot of fun. There’s a bit of preaching here and there, but mostly it’s vampire-killing set to rock music. Sort of like Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Mad Max. I’ve watched the first two episodes out of eight, and I really dig it. No pun intended. Because of the opal mines.

Definitely, the Russian people are caught up in this thing too. Some of the steps taken to excommunicate Russia from the international economy will backfire spectacularly and hurt people that otherwise should be natural allies in affecting change. At the same time there are gobs of people in Russia that seem fine with the, "it doesn't affect me, why should I care" attitude. Those people are being made to care. At some point, this war will be at an end and the question of what happens afterward, is reconciliation possible... none of that is clear at this point.
