I worked a bunch of extra hours at my other job this week, and Friday is my new Saturday, so I’m pretty wiped out and my brain is mush. Merely forming sentences is an effort, and the last thing I care about right now is politics.1 All I want to do is chill out with some new music.
People are still making cool tunes, even if you’ll never hear them on the radio.2 Let’s listen to some of ‘em!
Love and Rockets, “My Dark Twin”
Out of all the bands that were made up of former Bauhaus members and named after Fantagraphics comic books I never really liked, these guys are probably my favorite. Honestly, I haven’t thought about them in 30 years — holy crap, “So Alive” was in ‘89! — and I would’ve assumed they were dead. Glad they’re not! I’m not sure if this is a new song or a previously unreleased track, but I like it. Apparently they’re touring again. Good for them. I’m all for old guys still doing their thing and spiting any haters. Maybe they can collab with Pete & Bas.
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, “Dragon”
These weirdos are from Australia, which has been putting out a lot of strange rock music we don’t hear much about up here. They might have the dumbest band name ever, but they’ve put out something like 40 albums in 10 years. I can’t hum a single song of theirs, but it’s fun while I’m listening to it.
Matt Berry, “Food Chain Blues”
Berry is the funniest man alive, and he’s also good at music. This sounds like it was recorded in the ‘60s but it wasn’t. Unless he’s invented time travel, which seems within his abilities.
Surprise Chef, “Spiky Boi”
No idea. Nice, though, right?
Tenacious D, “Wicked Game”
I liked these guys way before you did. “Kyle took a bullet for me…” I never would’ve predicted them doing a perfect cover of this song, which is what makes them great.
Cobra Man, “Cadillac”
I miss the ‘80s, and so do people who are too young to remember ‘em. Thank goodness!
Queens of the Stone Age, “Emotion Sickness”
Their new album comes out next week, and I can’t wait. Josh Homme has been through a lot since the last album, and he’s ready to sing about it. Hell hath no fury like a divorced dad.
Ghost, “We Don’t Need Another Hero”
Tina Turner, R.I.P. They released this a few days before she died. Plus, it always cracks me up that Swedes can’t make a “Z” sound.
Chris Ballew, “Little By Little”
Remember the Presidents of the United States of America? “Lump” and “Peaches” and… all their other songs, I guess. Well, that’s this dude and now he seems kinda bummed.
HotWax, “Rip It Out”
I like this because it’s loud, they’re girls, that bass riff is pretty sweet, and they filmed the video in a row of filthy, disgusting toilets. Who said rock is dead?
Alright, that’s all I’ve got. I’m so tired. TGIF (Twyla Guarantees It’s Fantastic), and now please leave me alone.
I don’t really have an opinion on the [“T” word] news, except to say it’s the except same crime Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden got away with. This is obviously political, and I’m not going to tell his supporters to get over it. Out of all the reasons I’m not voting for that guy, this isn’t one of them.
The only time I listen to the radio anymore is in the car, and I work from home.
Wow. Absolutely nobody.
