It’s Friday, and I’ve spent the whole week reading news stories about stuff I can’t control and trying to think of something worthwhile to say about any of it. So now, I just want to listen to some music. I need a reminder that there’s more to the world than murder and rape and lies.
“Owner of a Lonely Heart,” Trevor Horn feat. Rick Astley
Yes, that’s Rick Astley singing a hit from before he became famous.
He’s done some other good covers in recent years, including a lovely rendition of “Everlong” by Foo Fighters:
And then there’s this from a few months ago, which I’ve watched about 20 times:
I like his version even better than the original.1 Rick Astley is cool now, can you believe it?
And speaking of unexpected covers…
“Heartbreaker,” Dolly Parton featuring Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo
That’s Pat Benatar herself doing background vocals. Dolly has put out almost 50 albums in her career, and she finally got around to doing a rock record. I wanna hear more!
“Herald of Darkness,” Old Gods of Asgard
That’s from a videogame called Alan Wake II, and I won’t even try to summarize what’s going on there. Suffice it to say it’s very weird. Goofy, yet disturbing.
And yes, I’m sure they made him look like John Wick to drive sales.
“Old Gods of Asgard” is actually a Finnish band called Poets of the Fall, and they’ve done music for several other games by the same developer, including Max Payne and Control. I don’t know much about Finland, but the guys who make those nutty games must be fun to party with. Although you might end up chained in the basement as a human sacrifice.
“GNT,” Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs
Yes, that’s the name of the band. Not Seven Pigs, or A Bunch of Pigs, or Check Out All These Pigs, but Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs. My condolences to the guy putting up the marquee!
Other than their awesome name, all I know about them is that they’re British and they give me hope that rock is not dead.
“Good Sport,” Matt Berry
In addition to being the funniest man in the history of the world, Matt makes great music. I feel like I’ve heard this melody on one of his shows?
“RAW,” Midwestern Roadkill
I know absolutely nothing about this band, but I’ve seen my share of midwestern roadkill so they get my vote. This song would sound great on cassette blasting from my old boombox. Reminds me of Ween’s early stuff.
Alright, I wrote something. Thank you for listening to some music with me. I’m really trying to believe people are basically good, and this helps.
Speaking of The Smiths, they play a small but integral role in The Killer, now showing on Netflix. (I cancelled my subscription during the whole Cuties debacle, but that was three years ago and I finally got over myself.)
After listening to your suggestions, I had to pull out my 78 of Deep Purple “Who do you think we are?” Hadn’t listened to it in a while.
