You know what human beings can’t control? Laughter.
Well, okay, they can keep you from laughing at something or somebody if they’re holding a gun to your head. (See North Korea.) But they can’t control what you think is funny. No two people have the exact same sense of humor, and either something is funny to you or it isn’t. If it is, no amount of hectoring or scolding is going to convince you it isn’t. Sometimes a thing is actually funnier because you’re ashamed of yourself for laughing.
But that doesn’t stop some people from trying to suppress comedy. Even certain “comedians.”
“I don’t think that the coercion and the taking advantage and the masturbating in front of people is cool, and I don’t think that those guys should be allowed to come back.”
Well, stealing jokes isn’t cool either but it hasn’t hurt Amy Schumer’s career. She’s a notorious joke thief — she even stole from Louis CK! — who is nonetheless co-hosting this year’s Oscars. You might think she could just enjoy her good fortune, wipe away an imaginary bead of sweat on her fivehead and go “Whew!” after getting away with her rampant plagiarism, instead of being such a whiny hypocrite. But being a whiny hypocrite is what made her famous, I guess.
As for disgraced comedian Louis CK, last week he released his latest project, a self-produced parodic “infomercial” for his most recent self-produced comedy special, Sorry. He just put it on YouTube, and nobody has forced him to take it down yet.
Here it is. If you watch this, you are an apologist for Louis CK’s behavior with women. And if you laugh, even once, you are an accomplice:
