Are You Ready for a Super-Scolding?
Faster than a speeding grievance
One of the great things about being Generation X — besides finally getting old enough that it’s okay not to care about anything anymore — is that we were the exact right age to appreciate some of the greatest pop culture of the 20th Century. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Terminator, Alien, RoboCop… The list goes on and on. We were there for all of it when it happened, and we were the perfect age to enjoy it for what it was. We hadn’t become jaded yet.
Of course, there’s another side to that coin. We’ve also watched helplessly as so many of those great movies were turned into franchises, and each successive round of sequels and reboots has been worse than the last.
Sure, the special effects are better these days, but the characters sure ain’t. Nostalgia might put butts in seats, but it can’t sustain the viewer through two hours of boring nonsense.
So I’ve been watching the approach of James Gunn’s Superman reboot with some optimism, but even more caution. He’s shown he can handle misfits like the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Suicide Squad. But the Man of Tomorrow himself? The paragon of truth, justice, and the American way? Is Gunn up to that?
