I’ve been trying to come up with a take on the Zelenskyy/Trump mess that will infuriate absolutely everybody. That’s what I do, after all. But I’m having a tough time even figuring out what I think about it for real. Okay…
On one hand, Putin is an evil dictator and I hate him. He started this war. His enemy isn’t necessarily my friend, but I won’t pretend he’s the good guy either.
On the other hand… well, what did Zelenskyy think was gonna happen? When has trying to out-Trump Trump ever worked?
Donald Trump is a known quantity. Whether you love him or hate him, he has never changed and he never will. You know that, walking into any room with him. It is what it is.
If you want something from him, all you have to do is be nice to him. If he’s happy in that particular moment, you’re set. You’re in.
Just ask RFK Jr.
Will the honeymoon last forever? Almost definitely not. Will it get you what you want in the meantime? Very probably. Your ego may take a bruising, but that’s called politics. Trump didn’t invent it.
The Trump Train will continue to roll on without me. And, also, in addition to that: I can’t believe how stupid and self-defeating his opponents continue to be. Again and again, they do all the work and he reaps all the rewards.
Wise up, dummies!
But at least we’re getting some good memes out of it…
Important Oscars Thoughts
The only movie I’ve seen in the past year that won anything last night was Dune: Part Two. So I’ll just assume the Academy made the right picks. I heard Conan made a Kendrick/Drake joke. Congratulations to whoever won, I guess? That’s all I got.
Important SNL Thoughts
Apparently Shane Gillis hosted again? Well, good for him.
Over the weekend I watched two Gene Hackman movies that came out within a few months of each other: Heist and The Royal Tenenbaums. Hadn’t seen either one since they came out.
It’s amazing that even in his ‘70s, Hackman was still the MVP on every team. Those are two very different movies from two very different auteurs, yet I can’t imagine any other actor playing either role. He was never much to look at, yet you can’t take your eyes off him. He just commands the screen.
Yet just a few years after he made those two classics, he decided to hang up the whole thing. Once you’ve worked with Ray Romano, you might as well go out on top.
Tenenbaums has aged the better of the two. Maybe because it didn’t seem of its time, even back in ‘02. My favorite Wes Anderson flick will always be Rushmore, though. “With friends like you, who needs friends?”
Gene Hackman - "he was never much to look at" - ah Jim you must have missed Birdcage. Gene as a woman was much to look at! ; )
Since pretty much everyone is already infuriated by Trump, Zelensky, Vance, Zelensky's advisors, Democrats who met with Zelensky prior to the meeting and told him (per Sen. Chris Murphy [Moron, CT]) to sign the deal and to not sign the deal, I don't really see any space for you to infuriate anyone who isn't already.
As for Trump, when will his opponents stop trying to figure out a way to make him become a "normal" politician? It's never, ever going to happen. How about accepting that he's totally not normal, but very predictable, and work with that? It looks like they're either too stupid to notice that and act on it, or so wrapped up in their own alternate reality that they'd rather keep losing to him rather than admitting he's never going to be normal.
